She is a founding editor of <em>Public Books</em> and the author of the award-winning <em>Between Women: Friendship, Desire, and Marriage in Victorian England</em> (Princeton) and <em>Apartment Stories: City and Home in Nineteenth-Century Paris and London</em>.
